What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a device that replaces lost teeth, though it differs from other kinds. It uniquely consists of varied materials fused to the sides of an artificial tooth. Due to this design, a bridge can “restore” one to four missing teeth at once.
In general, the best candidates for dental bridges lack adjacent teeth. These individuals can often have their smiles fully restored with one treatment; they won’t need follow-up care. Qualifying for a dental bridge is otherwise relatively simple, requiring only decent oral health.
Types of Dental Bridges

You’ll need to consult our dentists before getting a dental bridge. That way, we can assess your smile and see whether the device suits you. Our team can then draft a proper, customized treatment plan for you.
Based on your consultation results, we’ll suggest one of two types of dental bridges to you (if any). These are the following:
Traditional Dental Bridge

A traditional dental bridge (per its name) is the kind dentists have offered for decades. In general, it consists of dental crowns fused to either side of an artificial tooth. The device thus relies on nearby natural teeth – also known as “abutments” – for support.
Due to inexpensive materials, a traditional bridge usually isn’t costly. Its only downside is that a dentist must alter nearby teeth for the placement. This work permanently (and irreversibly) removes some of the abutments’ enamel, making their sensitivity more likely.
Implant Bridge

Different from a “standard” one, an implant bridge uses dental implants to secure itself. These titanium posts fuse with nearby bone tissue and thus keep the whole device secure and stable. Indeed, a bridge connected to implants should remain steady and stable for many years.
Implant bridges are great because they leave your existing teeth alone. As they rely on implant posts, placing them doesn’t require “prepping” of any abutments. That said, these bridges do cost more than the standard option.
The Benefits of Getting a Dental Bridge

A dental bridge from our office offers several benefits, including:
- Lifelike Looks – Since dental bridges use “teeth” capped with porcelain, they blend seamlessly with your smile.
- A Healthier Smile – As they fill your smile’s gaps, dental bridges reduce the spread of harmful bacteria and keep other teeth from tilting.
- Easier Eating – A dental bridge provides you with artificial teeth that help you chew food. As such, it lets you enjoy your meals without issue.
- Lasting Results – Dental bridges last an average of 5-15 years, with well-maintained ones working for 20+ years at times.
